How It Works: What Happens After You Buy a CO₂ Removal Credit

When you buy a CarbonConnect CO₂ Removal Credit, we carry out an official, certified process to retire your carbon removal in your name. This makes your impact permanent, transparent, and traceable.

Here’s what happens step-by-step:

Step 1 - Verification

Before anything is retired, each carbon removal unit has already been:

  • Measured & digitally tracked from field to soil

  • Verified under the Global Artisan C-Sink Standard

  • Added to CarbonConnect’s certified stock

Only verified carbon can be retired.

Step 2 - Retirement of the CO₂ you bought

After your purchase, CarbonConnect creates an official Retirement Transaction in the Global C-Sink Registry. This might take up to 2 weeks, since this is a manual process that will be checked by another 3rd party.

We register:

  • Your CO₂ amount (e.g., 100 kg)

  • Your name or company name

  • The retirement date

  • The reason for retirement (e.g., “Customer purchase”)

We register your CO₂ amount (e.g., 100 kg), your name or company name, the retirement date, and the reason for retirement (e.g., “Customer purchase”).
You can choose on the product page whether these details - apart from the CO₂ amount - are shown transparently in the public registry or kept fully or partially anonymous.

Step 3 - Permanent & Non-Resellable

Once submitted:

  • A unique Retirement ID (e.g., GSCP1234) is generated

  • Your retirement appears in the Global C-Sink Public Registry

  • Your credit becomes permanently locked

  • It cannot be transferred or resold (preventing double counting)

Your climate action is now official and irreversible.

Step 4 - Official Certificate

You receive an official CSI Retirement File, containing:

  • Your beneficiary name

  • Amount of CO₂ retired

  • Retirement ID & date

  • Location of the C-Sink

  • A QR code leading to the public registry entry

You will receive this certificate via email

Step 5 - Public, Transparent, Verifiable

Every retirement features:

  • A publicly verifiable registry entry

  • Timestamped documentation

  • A unique, permanent Retirement ID

  • A direct link to the underlying verified biochar C-Sink Unit

Anyone can verify your impact at any time.
